HIV / AIDS in Africa
This discussion workbook was developed from information
collected from youths, parents, churches, mosques, health
and government officials, teachers and people living with
HIV/AIDS. The book was originally developed for use in South
Africa by Mpho Putu and later reviewed and updated for use
in sub- Saharan Africa by Tokunbo Awoshakin. The field research
and study group survey was with the resources of the community
development unit of the Institute for Democracy in South
Africa IDASA and Civic Life International in Nigeria.

Nigeria is the largest oil producer in sub- Saharan
Africa. The oil wealth has, however, done little to change
the situation of the poor, especially the people in the
oil-producing region. This territory, which cuts across
eight of Nigeria's 36 states, is thus a classic illustration
of the paradox of poverty in the midst of plenty.
