The April 2007 general elections and its aftermath are immediate symptoms of the complex issues ahead of the country, her citizens and Nigeria’s status in the international community. Balancing the demands of democratic needs, political stability with economic sustainability and security concerns is just one example of Nigeria’s multifaceted challenges and opportunities. Responding wisely requires constructive and innovative approaches.

The School of Media and Public Affairs, George Washington University and Civic Life International With the support an emerging consortium of sponsors will convene a summit that will focus on the constructive ways to move Nigeria forward in ways that connects with the aspirations of Nigerian citizens and global expectation from Nigeria as a regional and global player.

Nigerian Democracy Summit to be held inWashington

As the world continues to ponder over Nigeria’s democratic future, following its controversial national elections in April, Civic Life International and the School of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University, have initiated a plan to host the two-day summit in Washington D.C., in October, in collaboration with an emerging consortium of partners and stakeholders from Nigeria and the United States of America (USA).
The key themes for the proposed Nigeria Democracy Summit are: (1) Democracy and Good Governance (2) Finance& Investment (3) Media and Public Knowledge (4) Energy Security, Environment &Pseudo-Terrorism, .
It will consider the prospects for Nigeria, an aspiring democracy to become a strategic, democratic partner for the US and a stabilizing influence in the African region. Thus, organizers of the summit have invited counterparts from the Nigerian Embassy in Washington D.C, US State Department, World Bank, Kettering Foundation, The USEPA, The Paul H.Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, NCDD, and other relevant institutions and organizations.
Tokunboh Awoshakin, pioneer Washington D.C Bureau Chief, THISDAY Newspaper, adjunct researcher with the Kettering Foundation and summit spokesman, commented on the event. “The proposed Nigeria democracy summit is another way to move Nigeria forward in a way that connects with the aspirations of Nigerian citizens and global expectation from Nigeria as a regional and global player.
